HISTORY OF PETANQUE

The game of Petanque can be traced back to the Roman and Greek glory days. It was not until 1907, at a place called "La Ciotta",  that a guy by the name of Jules Lenoir introduced the game in France.  The original game required the player to make a run of 3 to 4 steps before releasing the ball(boules). Jules had the misfortune to be born with some sort of poliomelitis hence making it difficult for him to make the "run". He suggested that the player will have his/her "Pieds tanques" in a playing circle marked on the ground, meaning that the ball could be released whilst in a still position. From "pieds tanques" came the game now known  as "Petanque".
